How the calculator works

There are two honest ways to estimate calories on a bike, and this tool offers both.

By effort uses the MET method, the standard approach in exercise science. Every activity has a MET value for how much energy it uses relative to sitting still, and cycling ranges from about 4 METs for a gentle spin to 11 or more for hard intervals. Combined with your body weight and time, that gives a calorie estimate. It needs no special equipment, just an honest read of how hard you rode.

By watts is more reliable, if your bike reports power. It takes the actual work you did at the pedals and scales it up for the efficiency of the human body, which is only around a quarter, so the calories you burn are roughly four times the useful work you produce. If your bike shows watts, use this mode. If it only shows a resistance level or a speed, it cannot give a true wattage, so use effort instead.

Two things jump out of that table, and both are true. Heavier people burn more for the same ride, because moving more mass costs more energy. And harder riding burns more, but not as dramatically more as most people expect, which is why duration and consistency matter as much as intensity.

Why calorie counts are only estimates

It is worth being straight about this, because a lot of fitness marketing is not. No calorie figure from a bike, a watch or a calculator is exact. Console counts are often optimistic because the machine rarely knows your true weight. MET estimates are population averages that cannot account for your individual metabolism. Even the watt-based figure relies on an assumed efficiency that varies slightly from person to person.

None of that makes them useless. A consistent estimate is a perfectly good yardstick for comparing one ride to another and tracking effort over time. Just do not treat the number as gospel, and in particular do not eat back an exact number of calories to match it, because the error bars are wide enough to undo a deficit. Burning more, sensibly

If your aim is to burn more, the levers are simple. Ride for longer, ride a little harder, or ride more often, and the third of those matters most. A moderate session you actually repeat four times a week beats a brutal one you do once and dread. How do you convert watts to calories?
Multiply your average watts by the ride time in minutes, then by about 0.06. That scales the work done at the pedals up to the energy your body actually uses, since human cycling is only around 24 percent efficient. A 150-watt ride for 30 minutes is very roughly 270 calories.
Is the calorie count on my exercise bike accurate?
Treat it as a rough guide. Console figures are approximate and often generous, because the bike usually does not know your exact weight. A power-based estimate is more reliable than an effort-based one, but every calorie count is an estimate rather than a measurement.
Does a harder ride burn a lot more calories?
More, but less than most people expect. Doubling the intensity does not double the burn, which is why total time and how often you ride matter as much as how hard. A sustainable moderate habit usually beats occasional maximal efforts.
Do heavier people burn more calories cycling?
