What the number means

Power to weight ratio is simply your power in watts divided by your body weight in kilograms. It matters because cycling, especially uphill, is a fight against gravity. Two riders each producing 250 watts will climb at very different speeds if one weighs 65kg and the other 90kg, because the lighter rider is moving less mass with the same engine. That is why W/kg, rather than raw watts, is the number cyclists compare.

The figure depends heavily on how long you can hold the effort. Anyone can produce a big number for five seconds. What riders usually mean by their power-to-weight ratio is the power they can sustain for around twenty minutes, which is a reasonable proxy for cycling fitness. The rough bands below use that twenty-minute effort.

Treat these as broad orientation rather than a grading. Age, sex, how long you have trained and your natural physiology all move the goalposts, and a comfortable recreational rider has nothing to prove against a racing benchmark.

How to improve your W/kg

There are only two levers, and the maths rewards both. You can raise the top of the fraction by producing more power, which comes from consistent training, particularly sustained efforts and intervals like those in our HIIT bike workout. Or you can lower the bottom by losing excess body weight, if you have any to lose, which raises the ratio without touching your power. Most riders who improve their W/kg meaningfully do a bit of both.

A word of caution on the weight side. Chasing a lighter number by under-eating is a well-known way to lose power, health and enjoyment, because you cannot train hard on too little fuel. Measuring your power at home

To use this properly you need a power figure, and a lot of indoor bikes now provide one. Smart bikes and many connected indoor cycles display watts directly, and apps like Zwift and Kinomap use that figure. If your bike shows watts, do a hard, even twenty-minute effort, take the average power, and enter it above with your weight. If your bike only shows a resistance level or a speed, it cannot give you a true wattage, and any W/kg from it is a guess.

Is a higher power to weight ratio always better?
For climbing and accelerating, broadly yes, because you are moving less weight per watt. On the flat, raw power matters more than W/kg, since aerodynamics and total wattage dominate. And a high ratio achieved by under-fuelling is counterproductive, because it costs you power and health.
What power to weight ratio do I need to race?
Entry-level amateur racing typically starts to become realistic around 3.5 to 4 W/kg for a 20-minute effort, though it varies by category, terrain and event. Plenty of enjoyable riding and training happens well below that, so it is a benchmark rather than a barrier.
Can I measure power to weight ratio on any exercise bike?
