The verdict
The Freedom Air takes a different approach to resistance from the flagship. Its DualTorque system combines a fan with eight levels of magnetic resistance, so you get the effort-scaling feel of air plus the option to dial in a fixed level, which suits everyone from beginners to stronger rowers.
It folds down and rolls away, weighs just 40kg, and carries JTX’s two-year in-home warranty, which is rare at this price and a real reason to choose it over an anonymous budget machine. At £349 it is a lot of specialist-brand rower for the money.

Resistance and feel
The Freedom Air’s trick is combining two resistance types. The fan gives the effort-scaling feel of an air rower, while eight levels of magnetic resistance let you set a fixed baseline on top, which JTX calls DualTorque. In practice that makes it flexible, easy for a beginner on a low setting, and able to push a stronger rower harder. It is not as refined as a pure commercial air rower, but it is versatile for the money.
