ProForm Pro Trainer 500 Review 2026

The ProForm Pro Trainer 500 is a no-nonsense iFIT indoor cycle: an 11kg flywheel, 16 levels of Silent Magnetic Resistance, a belt drive and a clear LCD, for £499, with a pair of dumbbells thrown in. It runs iFIT from your own tablet, and it is all but identical to ProForm’s Sport CX.

The verdict

As a straightforward indoor cycle the Pro Trainer 500 does the fundamentals well. The 11kg flywheel is a decent weight for the price and gives a smooth, road-like pedal stroke, the 16 levels of quiet SMR resistance cover the range most riders need, and the belt drive keeps it quiet. The ergonomic padded saddle and non-slip multi-position handlebars both adjust horizontally and vertically, the toe-cage pedals keep your feet secure, and a 1-window LCD shows your stats. ProForm also bundles a pair of 1.4kg dumbbells for off-bike work.

iFIT comes via your own tablet on the integrated holder rather than a built-in screen, which keeps the price down, and SmartAdjust can set your resistance automatically in a class. The honest context is its own stablemate: the Sport CX is essentially the same bike at the same £499 price, with the same 11kg flywheel, 16 levels and 114kg limit. The difference is in the extras: the Sport CX adds a Watts readout and a Quick Stop brake, while the Pro Trainer 500 instead includes the dumbbells. As a value iFIT indoor cycle, it is a solid, sensible pick.

Strengths

  • Decent 11kg flywheel for a smooth, road-like ride
  • 16 quiet SMR resistance levels and a belt drive
  • Pair of 1.4kg dumbbells included for off-bike work
  • Fully adjustable saddle and multi-position handlebars
  • SmartAdjust automatic resistance in iFIT classes
  • Good value at £499

Watch-outs

  • No built-in screen, you supply the tablet
  • No Watts readout (the Sport CX has one)
  • Best features need an ongoing iFIT membership
  • Same price as the near-identical Sport CX

Ride feel and real-world experience

On the bike, the Pro Trainer 500 rides like a capable budget indoor cycle. The 11kg flywheel carries good momentum for the money, so the pedal stroke is smooth and road-like rather than light, and the 16 levels of SMR magnetic resistance are quiet and cover everything from steady spinning to a hard climb. The belt drive keeps it hushed enough for a flat or shared home.

The position and fit are good. The ergonomic padded saddle adjusts both ways, the non-slip multi-position handlebars adjust horizontally and vertically so you can set a proper spin posture, and the toe-cage pedals with straps keep your feet planted. It is a comfortable, adjustable platform for the price, with a 114kg user limit.

On the console side it is deliberately simple: a 1-window LCD shows your time, speed, distance, calories, pulse and RPM, and a tablet holder sits in front of it to run iFIT from your own device. Note that, unlike the Sport CX, it does not show a Watts power readout. The included pair of 1.4kg dumbbells is a nice touch for following iFIT’s off-bike strength segments.

Assembly, size and setup

The Pro Trainer 500 arrives boxed for home assembly, a fairly typical indoor-cycle build of around 30 to 60 minutes with the supplied tools. At 42.5kg it is manageable, and it sits on front transport wheels to move once built. Its footprint is roughly 121 by 58cm. As with any new bike, check the pedals and bolts are fully tight after the first few rides.

Living with it: noise, footprint and storage

The belt drive and SMR magnetic resistance keep the Pro Trainer 500 quiet, so it suits a flat or shared home, and it is mains powered. It is an indoor cycle rather than a folder, so it wants a permanent spot, though its footprint is modest. Upkeep is minimal beyond a wipe-down and a periodic bolt check.

The iFIT app and subscription

The Pro Trainer 500 runs iFIT, the same platform as NordicTrack, from your own tablet or phone connected over Bluetooth and rested on the holder. A 30-day iFIT trial is included; after that a membership is sold separately, renews until cancelled and needs Wi-Fi. It unlocks more than 10,000 trainer-led workouts, scenic routes and SmartAdjust automatic resistance, with heart rate via the optional SmartBeat arm band or a Bluetooth chest strap, and data syncing to Strava, Garmin and Apple Health.

Is the iFIT subscription worth it?

As with the other tablet-based ProForm cycles, the subscription is optional. The bike works as a manual indoor cycle without iFIT, with your stats on the LCD, so you only pay if the classes and routes motivate you. The 30-day trial lets you judge that. For harder, class-led spin training iFIT is genuinely good and worth it; for self-directed sessions while you watch your own entertainment, you can run the bike happily without a membership.

How it compares

The comparison that matters most is with its own stablemate, the ProForm Sport CX: the same bike at the same £499, differing only in that the Sport CX adds a Watts readout and a Quick Stop brake while the Pro Trainer 500 includes dumbbells. Beyond ProForm, the Reebok Z-Tech Sprint is the no-subscription alternative, and our top spin pick the JTX Studio Pro offers a heavier 16kg flywheel for more, also without a monthly fee.

Similar spec, different brand: you may want to consider the Reebok Z-Tech Sprint, a no-subscription connected spin bike, if you would rather avoid a monthly iFIT fee.

Who it is for

Buy the Pro Trainer 500 if you want a capable, value iFIT indoor cycle and you will run it from your own tablet, and the bundled dumbbells appeal for off-bike work. If you would rather have a Watts readout and a brake than the dumbbells, the near-identical Sport CX is the one to pick at the same price. If you would rather avoid a subscription, the Reebok Z-Tech is the alternative.
